Fire Door Misconceptions

This session will address common misconceptions regarding the installation and inspection of fire doors. Led by a distinguished panel of experts, the discussion will feature representatives from the NFPA 80/105 Technical Committee, including voices from IDA, DASMA, manufacturers, and experienced technicians.

Topics will include:

  • Clarifying frequent misunderstandings related to rolling fire doors
  • Providing insight into the standards development process
  • Previewing proposed changes for the 2028 editions of NFPA 80/105

Joe Anderson

Vortex Doors

Joe Anderson is the Director of Technical Training at Vortex Industries, where he oversees training programs for more than 600 field employees nationwide. With over 21 years at the company—and six years leading technical training—Joe has built deep expertise in fire doors, safety standards, and technician development. He serves on the NFPA Technical Committee and holds multiple industry certifications, including CFDAI (Certified Fire + Egress Door Assembly Inspector) through the Door Hardware Institute and Master Technician Certification through Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation. Over the course of his career, Joe has conducted fire door certifications in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, performed repairs, and tested multitudes of fire doors from a most manufacturers. His hands-on experience and leadership allow him to train and mentor both new and seasoned technicians across the organization. Outside of work, Joe enjoys an active lifestyle with hiking, swimming, and fitness. He also spends much of his time with his kids, sharing in their hobbies and interests.

Matt Faupel

Canadian Doormaster

Matt Faupel is a Certified Master Technician through the IDEA.  Starting is career in doors at just 18 years old, Matt has spent the last 25 years working with all types of equipment, including Rolling, Sectional, Fire, Gates, Docks, Automatic Pedestrian Doors, Mega Doors, Hangars, Automated access control, High Speed, Welding and Custom Fabrication. In 2019, Matt founded the DoorGuy Mafia, an online community committed to uplifting and educating the door community and showcasing the work of technicians all over the world on Facebook and Instagram. In late 2024, Matt’s dream of owning his own business was actualized when he took over Canadian Doormaster, in Burnaby British Columbia with his 2 partners. When Matt is not on the tools, in the office, or educating the door community, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking huge mountains, taking photos of nature, and cooking. 

David Mount

Mount Onsite Training

David Mount is the owner of Mount Onsite Training and Mount Garage Doors Inc. located in Finksburg Md. David is an IDEA Master Tech and is part of the NFPA 80/105 Technical Committee representing IDA. He is a member of the IDEA Two day School facility. Dave also served on the IDEA Board of Directors from 2014-2017. Dave was the co-recipient of the Dan Apple Award in 2020.

Milt Prosperi

Clopay Corporation

Milt Prosperi, an avid bowler and softball player, who enjoys jigsaw and crossword puzzles, is the Director of Engineering for Clopay with over 36 years’ experience within the Rolling Door and Sectional Door industry. Beginning his career in 1985 with Atlas Door, leaving to own and operate Eagle Door in southern California, then moving on to Alumatek-Pacific, QMI, and finally CornellCookson, Milt has a solid understanding of both commercial and residential door products. His current responsibilities include oversight of Design and Production Engineering across multiple facilities. He has several patents and is the current Rolling Door Division Chair for DASMA. He has worked all aspects of our industry, from Sales, Service, Field Installations, and Product Design & Innovation. He looks forward to contributing to the efforts supported by IDEA.

Curt Schroeder

Janus / Asta America

Curtis began his career in the door industry as an Engineering Technician with C.H.I Overhead doors, Rolling Steel Slat door division in 2002. In 2008 relocated to Georgia accepting the position of Rolling Steel Engineer at Janus International. Currently holds the position of Director of Engineering for Janus International / ASTA America, directing the engineering activities for all rolling steel product lines across the business units. With a large emphasis on training, Curtis has been involved with both internal and external dealer/installer-based training, specifically Commercial Rolling and Rolling Fire door training, valuing and utilizing IDEA curriculum to train, test and certify installers. A DASMA technical committee member for over 20+ years. Served as chair to the Joint Technical Group and current chair of the Rolling Door Training and Education subcommittee. Currently represent DASMA on NFPA 80/105 and 80A technical committees. Served two terms as an IDEA board member. Humbled and honored to be a small part of this industry, to contribute, and learn every day. On the personal side, blessed with a wife of 35 years, two children and one granddaughter of 17months, which is pretty awesome!
