Scam Awareness
Unfortunately, IDA is aware that garage door scams are occurring in cities throughout the United States and Canada with greater frequency. In response to these scams IDA has developed several resources to help educate garage door companies and consumers on the types of scams, how to avoid being scammed, and what to do if you or your company is a victim of a scam.
As the trade association representing the garage door industry, IDA will continue to provide these types of resources to help its members and their customers.
However, it must be clearly understood that IDA has no enforcement authority over companies that engage in this type of false, misleading, fraudulent, or criminal activity. Instances of scams must be dealt with individually, which is why IDA has developed the education materials and the referral resources that appear on our website.

Additional Action Related to Reporting Scams
IDA is aware scams are happening in the garage door industry. As an organization, we are working to provide resources to members and consumers on how to avoid scams. Our best defense is to educate consumers on how NOT to get scammed. However, if a member or a consumer has been scammed, we recommend the following: If the scam occurred due to a false or misleading ad, we recommend you report the ad to Google (for instructions on how to report fraudulent ads to Google, click here). If business fraud has occurred, such as someone impersonating another business, we recommend you report this incident to the Better Business Bureau (click for link). If you or your business has been the victim of criminal activity (such as fraud), we recommend you contact your local police department or local division of the FBI.
IDA Infographic Resources
IDA is taking the proactive approach to empower members and to educate consumers on how to avoid garage door scams and where to find reputable service providers. By providing resources to members including webinars, articles, news updates, messaging and more, IDA members can do outreach to consumers in their area. IDA is also doing consumer outreach via digital advertising to warn consumers of garage door scams and how to avoid them, plus additional resources to help educate consumers. We are also monitoring the media coverage, doing pro-active outreach in areas scams are taking place and sharing this information with our members and consumers. Our goal is to provide our Find a Professional resource so consumers can be assured they are contacting a reputable and trained professional garage door company.
