Spring Cleaning Starts with Garage Door Safety

Spring has sprung, and the race to tackle spring cleaning is on. While it’s the perfect time to declutter and refresh your home and garage, it’s also an ideal opportunity to conduct a visual inspection and perform basic safety and maintenance checks on one of the largest and most frequently used moving parts in your home, your garage door system.

Steps to Performing an Inspection of the Garage Door

Visual Inspection: Stand inside the garage with the door fully closed. Carefully look over springs, cables, rollers, pulleys, and mounting hardware such as hinges. Check for signs of wear, rust, damage, or fraying, especially on cables.

Listen: Open the garage door while you are inside the garage. Unusual noises such as squeaking or grinding may indicate a more serious issue.

Balance Test: If your garage door has an automatic opener, disconnect it and operate the door manually. Lift the door halfway and then fully open. The door should move smoothly and stay open on its own. If it feels heavy, uneven, or won’t stay open, the door may be out of balance.

Test Reversing Mechanism: With the garage door fully open, place a piece of wood (such as a 2×4) flat on the floor in the center of the door opening. Use the wall button or remote to close the door. When the door touches the wood, it should automatically reverse. If it doesn’t, the system may need to be serviced.

Photo Eye Test: Start with the garage door fully open. Begin closing the door and wave a long object, like a broomstick, in front of one of the photo‑eye sensors to break the beam. The door should reverse immediately. If it doesn’t, allow the door to close fully, clean the sensors with a soft, dry cloth, and gently realign them if needed. Then repeat the test.

Test Force Settings: With the garage door open fully, push the garage door opener’s transmitter or wall button to close the door. With the door closing, carefully place your hands beneath the door area. The door should reverse easily when resistance is met. If it continues closing, pull your hands away immediately; this indicates excessive force and a potential safety risk.

If anything looks damaged, feels unsafe, or doesn’t perform as expected during these checks, contact a trained garage door professional using IDA’s Find a Professional tool.  Garage door systems are under high tension, and should only be repaired by licensed, experienced technicians.
